Delhi Smog – Root Cause

Recent times have seen an alarming deterioration of the air quality in and around Delhi NCR area due to Delhi Smog. We endeavor to find out the root cause of this smog in this article.

Probable causes can be the pollution from Industries, pollution from traffic, pollution from waste burning inside Delhi NCR region, pollution due to bio mass burning in neighboring states like Haryana, Punjab and UP or or last but not the least Diwali.

All of the above cited reasons are self explanatory and contribute to the Smog in one way or the other. However, recently we stumbled across a video forwarded on WhatsApp titled “Does Diwali cause Delhi Smog?” and which is discussing this issue and we feel it is somewhere closer to the root cause of this major problem.

For a quick reference, here is the video:

As the content creator has analysed the root cause to the delay in sowing of rice (paddy). This thereby extends the harvest season to later parts of the year. During this time the wind direction changes due to change in duration of the day and onset of winters. This pushes the entire smog to Delhi region. Thus, we can overcome the problem by pre-poning the sowing season to original timelines.

Now, its the turn of the state governments of Punjab, Haryana, UP and Delhi. They have to take steps, to reverse the harmful effects, by changing the crop cycle.

Hopefully we should be able to overcome this problem of pollution and Delhi Smog in coming times.
